This piece was shot on the Canon C500 by Canadian DP Kelly Wolfert csc. This was the first time we worked with the C500 Log workflow, which proved to be a bit cumbersome. The raw footage was captured on the Gemini Recorder. To conform the media, we first had to use a utility provided by Gemini. Once compiled, we used another utility from Canon to export the media as DPX sequences. From there, we were able to start grading in SpeedGrade. First, we applied the Canon C300/C500 camera patch and then CLEAN SL-3500. Instantly the images just popped. The C500 is a really nice camera with great dynamic range and really blossomed when our SpeedLook was applied. This rich and beautiful documentary short was just recently nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2013 Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards.
